The Boy Genius Report has put up an early review on a near final build of the upcoming Motorola Droid, after their initial preview with some photos of the device. They go into some more detail here and it does look very promising. There’s a good line in the review saying that the only real iPhone competitor would be the next iPhone itself, and I can somewhat agree with that statement.
It’s really going to boil down to the platform support and how well the community embraces the hardware and software, in the form of Android Marketplace applications. The real reason the iPhone is on top right now is because of the thousands upon thousands of App Store applications available, even despite there being better hardware out there (albeit not as common as the iPhone) and with the limitations of Apple’s restrictive software policies on the App Store.
That said, it is a beautiful device and hopefully it does well. I myself will be keeping a very close eye on this as my agreement with AT&T is up…
PS – Yes I have an iPhone with AT&T and I enjoy my device because A) some of the fantastic apps and games available on the App Store and B) some of the fantastic apps not on the App Store via jail-breaking. It never hurts to see what else is on the horizon, and this new Droid device is one of the more exciting prospects in recent history.
