GeoCities Closing Down for Good

closed

The end of an era has come.  GeoCities, one of the first free hosting services on the internet where tons of people first published their ‘home’ on the web, is closing for good tomorrow (10/26).  For me, this site along with Tripod were the home of many ‘home made’ web sites back in the day.  I myself had a site on Tripod and I remember those days well.  In the case of GeoCities, the crazy part is just how much was hosted on that site.   Anything from hobiests, cooks, programmers hosting their applications, sports sites, you name it and it was on there.  It truly was revolutionary back in it’s prime.

A digital archiver by the name of Jason Scott is trying to backup as much as they can of the website, which according to the source is about 10 terabytes in size.  In the present day of affordable web hosting, easy web site creation tools, and so on, I can definitely see GeoCities as being a legacy component of the internet.  That doesn’t mean that maybe it still didn’t have a use, nor do I want to undermine what it has accomplished, but I think it was time to move on.

In any event it’ll be sad to see GeoCities finally close down and it had a great run.  Here’s to the next great revolution on the internet, in whatever form it arrives.
