Google Chrome OS Officially Revealed

Today, Google finally revealed their long awaited Google Chrome OS.  This came from a small launch event hosted by Google, and not some fake sudden release as seen a few weeks back.

The operating system is an open source Linux based OS, set to launch next year in 2010, and according to Google will be initially targeted towards netbooks.  It will also run on x86 architecture, and ARM chips as well.

One that that is interesting with Chrome OS is that Google decided to implement their own GUI on top of the Linux kernel, and not an already existing desktop interface like GNOME or KDE.  This is part of Google’s plan to develop an operating system for the masses, one that reflects what they feel a light-weight, user friendly, internet centric operating system should behave like.

From the screenshots and video released today, it looks like an arguably revolutionary design, almost based on making the operating system into a big multi-tabbed browser.  While this is quite an interesting way to look at an OS, this will be sure to bring some alienation, and a large portion of the data (if not more) within the OS is stored on the Google Cloud, and not the hard drive itself.

Very interesting indeed.  Looks like 2010 will be an interesting year for more than just Google Chrome. As a last note, the Google Chrome OS is also available now, but as source code only.
